EU may challenge U.S. online gambling law: McCreevy

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - U.S. restrictions on online gambling may be challenged by the European Union, the bloc's top financial regulator said on Tuesday.

"In my view it is probably a restrictive practice and we might take it up in another fora," EU Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy told the European Parliament.

The United States was protecting its own gambling industry by stopping foreign companies from entering the online betting sector, McCreevy said.

I have a questions:
How can you get a photo Identication card where you live?
I dont mean a driver license.

In the US people can a get an ID card with their photo on it from DMV(not a driver license) do you guys have that up north? or maybe in Montreal, Quebec?

Takes months for these WTO challenges to be put forward and years for decisions to be made.

The US has until March to appeal Antigua WTO ruling, but it seems unlikely they will alter their protectionist stance and allow competition from offshore.

Given that both the Las Vegas Sands and Harrahs plan to provide online gaming to the European (non-US really) market this quarter I imagine the Europeans are becoming increasingly annoyed, perhaps sufficiently to challenge the entire US gaming structure including the UIGEA through the WTO.

Alternatively they might at some point consider rescinding the licenses for US corporations. As a bargaining chip this could produce an immediate reaction, particularly if the US corporations were deriving significant revenue.

The bottom line is don't expect anything to happen soon.
